The Georgia Straight is a free weekly local news and entertainment newspaper in Vancouver, BC, Canada. The cover story, The Opioid Crisis, is an ongoing drug problem in North America with an increase of overdose deaths every year.
Challenge
Create a composition for the cover and consider the amount of negative space for copy. In addition, it will be printed on newspaper where colours are muddy and it’s seen inside the newspaper bin.
Solution
I gained inspiration from Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam, which illustrates the concept of both God and humans reaching toward each other. In my layout, I wanted to show the similar concept that both sides of the opioid crisis (the city and the drug users) need to reach towards each other to solve the problem.
